The Dual N-back Game

I have been using the dual n-back game for a while now on and off and I wanted to try and do something more regularly so that people can see the great effects of this simple program.

An n-back task is simple. You are given a letter a stimuli, then you are asked to notice if the step n back matches up with the current step. For instance, if I was playing two back then the third step of a d a would be a match. You can check out the wikipedia page if you don't get it.
While you're there, look at the article on Dual n-back tests, which are just two n-back tests at once, too. The article mentions how they've been considered great tools for increasing fluid intelligence, which is used for things like solving puzzles and everything up to the end of this sentence.

I will be doing once weekly updates regarding my progress and will be using three examples as guides on my progress. These are

1. I will note any noticeable mental differences in me.
2. I will perform an IQ test, using the test at www.intelligencetest.com as a basis.
3. Notes on other mental upgrades I will be trying. (immersion swimming, musical training, visual imagery and the like)

Welcome to level up. Bing!

One of the wonderful things about being alive in the twenty first century is that, as an adult, I still get to admit that I play video games. I'm not a gamer, but as with many male adults it has become clear that this is not something that we wanted to do.
You can tell a lot about a person by the time of video games that a person plays. If you like adventure games then you could be looking for an escape or really wish you lived in a world with a save button. If you play Counter Strike and sport games you may have built a pyramid of beer cans at one point in your life or another. If you're more into MMORPGs, you probably don't have a job any more.
For me it was never down to what kind of video game it was. What was important was that the character improved. I don't want a new weapon as much as I want a way to improve the weapon I've got. I don't want a new vehicle unless I can look on the screen and say "that's my character". What I want is a chance to start small, grow infinitely and crush whatever challenge is in my way, like a dishonest chess player whose partner keeps going to the bathroom.
While video games may not have a lot of defining positive features, I think tat this experience is one which everyone should be able to relate. Sometimes in life there come moments of epiphany, where everything goes bright and we get to say "I understand".
I have decided to keep a blog because I've decided to start chasing these moments and admitting to the rest of the world that I'm an epiphany junkie. It has come to my attention that I'm not the only person who is interested in learning the things that I've figured out so far and so I've decided to make this file available to those who are interested in seeing what I'm up to these days. I hope that what I discover will be enlightening for us all.
